what happens to the gear card when the crew card is returned to my hand? we played it as jettisoned , for simplicity's sake if nothing else

Due to a complication, i had to return a crew member to my hand.

Correct, they are jettisoned. Please see page 22 of the rulebook for the full entry on Attach.
